In Humanscale’s quest to create a net positive impact on the earth, we have encountered organizations who challenge the “rules” of traditional manufacturing. One such organization is the Brooklyn-based design firm Uhuru.

Since its foundation in 2004, Uhuru has established itself as one of the country’s most innovative manufacturers. Uhuru’s furniture is derived from repurposed wood and other upcycled materials and expertly crafted by hand. One project even utilized landfill-destined wood from the Coney Island boardwalk. The multi-disciplinary design firm believes that “each piece conceived, designed, and produced should add to a greater good in the world.” As Uhuru continues to grow, their custom pieces have even been featured in the Smithsonian and Brooklyn Museum’s permanent collections. Uhuru Humanscale Office Design At NeoCon 2017, Uhuru featured a custom piece that merged their Elements 1X1 table with Humanscale’s QuickStand Under Desk. The collaboration was developed in their Pennsylvania Studio, which employs 20 metal and wood artisans. The designers used FSC certified veneer wood and no added formaldehyde in the wood tops. The steel base was comprised of 30% recycled steel with low VOC powder coat finish. Uhuru Humanscale Office Design with Sit Stand desks The combination of Uhuru’s wood table tops with the latest additions to our sit/stand line, QuickStand Eco and QuickStand Under Desk, created truly unique workspace solutions.   Uhuru Humanscale Office Design with Horizon Task Light The custom workstations also included Humanscale task lights, such as Horizon Colors, and ergonomic work tools like our all-in-one docking station, M/Connect.
